Guest Post: Knights Under the Sea
Today we are joined by Zoraida Cordova, author of The Vicious Deep. I hope you enjoy her little insight into some of the background of the story.
I am not a damsel in distress. But I’ve always had a soft
spot for knights in shining armor. Maybe it’s a side effect from
growing up on Disney movies. Maybe I just have a thing for men with weapons.
Whatever it is, it led me to taking a course in college called “Arthurian
Literature.”
We learned
about the Arthurian myths, from Malloy to the Mists of Avalon to A Connecticut
Yankee in King Arthur’s court. I’d always loved magic, but there was something
special about a young hero learning
to become something greater than himself. He just doesn’t start off that way! The best parts are watching him grow.
When I set out to write The Vicious Deep, I wanted to keep that
sense of adventure that comes with mixing the real world with the old world.
When Tristan sets out on his journey, whether it’s on the enchanted island of
Toliss or the underground clubs of Coney Island, he isn’t a knight in shinning
armor. He’s cocky and he’s clueless when he hurts people. But he’s also brave,
confident, and has a good heart. It’s the potential he will need to prove himself
worthy of the throne. Maybe even worth of the girl. The Vicious Deep is only his beginning.
Thanks for stopping by, Zoraida!
