Die For Me by Amy Plum

Die For Me
Revenants 1
Author: Amy Plum
Pages: 352 pgs
Genre: YA
Release Date: May 10th 2011
Review Source: Publisher

First of all, I want to thank HarperTeen for sending me an advanced copy to review!

Die For Me is Amy Plum's debut novel and I'm so glad that I got th chance to read it! It's the first of a trilogy and I was pretty surprised at how captivated I became while reading it.

Kate Mercier moves with her sister Georgia, to Paris after their parents die tragically. Both sisters deal with the loss in different ways; Georgia goes out to parties and clubs every night, Kate stays at home with her nose in a book. All she wants is her normal life back.

But when Kate meets the beauitful, French Vincent Delacroix, she finds herself immersed in a world she never could have imagined. He and his friends are revenants, beings that are fated to die and return, over and over. And even though she finds herself falling for him, Kate has to decide if she can risk going down that road.

I wasn't entirely sure when I first started reading this if I was going to like it, but as I continued I found it nearly impossible to put down. The characters are fascinating and I loved getting to learn a little bit about each of them. I also loved that the revenants were also able to make jokes about themselves, lightening things up when things got to tense.

Kate and Vincent had a very sweet relationship, their connection stronger than I think even they realized. I loved the moments that they had together.

Amy's mytholgy for the revenants was new and fresh, a different idea for the world of paranormals and I am most definitely looking forward to what else she has in store for these characters. The Vespertine by Saundra Mitchell

The Vespertine
Vespertine1
Author: Saundra Mitchell
Pages: 293 pgs
Genre: YA, Historical-Fiction
Release Date: March 7th 2011
Review Source: Purchased

I will admit that right off the bat I fell in love with this story. Saundra Mitchell's writing was beautifully written, a lyrical prose that flowed wonderfully with the historical time period.

Amelia van den Broek is sixteen and approaching that time, the time between childhood and adulthood and is setting her sights on finding a husband. Her brother sends her to Baltimore for the summer, and with the help of her friend Zora, Amelia has an experience she'll never forget.

The young man that catches her eye, Nathaniel, isn't considered a proper prospect, but that doesn't stop Amelia from falling for him. Especially when she realizes that she's not exactly normal. She can see visions, visions that end up with terrifying results.

Saundra absolutely took my breath away with this story, weaving the historical setting with the paranormal world and creating a master piece. Even the instant connection between Amelia and Nathaniel was perfect and I wanted to more.

These two characters are also compared to fire and air, two elements, that worked amazingly with their talents. And Saundra has said her next book, The Springsweet, will have the water and earth elements. After reading what she was able to do with this story, I know I will be first in line for the companion piece.

The Vespertine was fascinating and enthralling, I highly recommend it. To keep up to date with Saundra Mitchell's writing and future stories you can check out her website http://www.saundramitchell.com/ and follow her on Twitter http://twitter.com/#!/SaundraMitchell.

Bad Behavior by Jennifer Lane

Bad Behavior
The CONduct Series 2
Author: Jennifer Lane
Pages: 312 pgs
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: March 8th 2011
Review Source: Publisher

In this sequel to With Good Behavior, Jennifer Lane takes us on an emotional journey of discovery and strength with her two main characters that left me wanting more. She proved once again why I love her writing.

Picking up where WGB left off, Sophie and Grant continue their routines of going to work and parole meetings, only now they have to add couples counseling into the mix. This won't be an easy task for either of them, especially since they are still learning about each other.

Our favorite parolees both have to face things they never thought they'd have to again, including an old professor of Sophie's and Grant's incarcerated father, relying on each other to make it through. Even amidst the bad and difficult situations they have to face, good news is on the horizon, proving that they can make it together.

Jennifer Lane maintained a beautiful mixture of humor and angst as she delved deeper into Sophie and Grant's story. New nicknames, interesting twists, and difficult decisions are just a few of the things that Bonnie and McSailor have to face and that's not even the half of it.

I fell for the sweet and sensitive Grant in With Good Behavior, but in this continuation he is even more adorable and dream worthy. Who doesn't want a strong and sensitive former Navy Sailor?

There were a few sensitive scenes that took place, and this is not for younger readers, but it's a story that's intrigued me from the very beginning. And for one am already anxious for the conclusion to this series, On Best Behavior. Jen has done a fantastic job dealing with the complicated emotions one has to face when being released from prison and I looked forward to reading anything else from her in the future.

Mistwood by Leah Cypess

I was enthralled with this story from the very beginning. Not only did Leah Cypess pull me in with her writing, but she also delivered a fantastic story. The mystery of Mistwood will leave you guessing until the very end.

Isabel wakes up in the forest of the Mistwood and is taken back to the castle to protect Prince Rokan. She is the Shifter and that is what she does. She isn't human, she is a creature of mist and wind that can shift forms at the drop of a hat, and it is her duty to protect the king and his family.

Only problem... Isabel has no memories of her past before Prince Rokan found her in the Mistwood.

She goes on instinct alone, but that will only get her so far. Especially since she can't shift anymore. And with everyone keeping secrets from her, Isabel has to work through them to uncover the truth, a truth she not want to know. What happened to her since the last time she served the king? Why can't she remember?

Just like Isabel, the reader is figuring out what happened right along with her. And it's a mystery that is slowly unraveled until the very end. You won't see what's coming. I found myself wanting more when I reached the last page.

Leah did a tremendous job in creating this world and showing the struggle Isabel went through as she learned more about her past and her new charge. Things aren't always as they seem and for a creature that works off of instinct and right and wrong, that's not always easy to see.

I'm definitely crossing my fingers for more. And in a couple of months a companion novel, Nightspell, should be coming out! Thank you Leah. If you'd like to learn more about upcoming books from this author you can check out her website http://www.leahcypess.com/ and follow her on Twitter http://twitter.com/LeahCypess.

12.21.12 Blog Tour Character Interview

Dimitri Kronastia Character Interview:

ATB: Thank you for joining us today, Dmitri. So, to start off with, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?

DK:Oh, there’s not much to tell.  Contrary to what you’ve heard about me, I like to keep a pretty low profile. At least, enough so that that nothing can ever be traced back to me.

ATB:You’ve obviously had to take on different personas throughout the years, would you mind sharing a couple of them? Was there anything about them that you enjoyed?

DK: Of course, as you’ve learned, my real name is Oxiriz, or “Osiris” as it tends to be written these days.  In the new world, I was also sometimes called Yum’k or Hauham.  Did I enjoy them? Having whole civilizations serving your every whim? Yeah, a little. It’s good to be the God.

Outside of the ancient world, however, I haven’t made too many grossly public incarnations. Well, there was that one, but luckily the  details around Rasputin’s life are mixed in mythology.

ATB: How would you describe your relationship with Victoria over the years?

DK: Well, hindsight is 20-20, isn’t it? I never understood for so many years why she was not only upset with me… Well, actually I thought I knew that part quite well. I never could have guessed what her true motivations were. And, you know, through the years, sometimes I was mad at her too, but more for selfish reasons. I wanted her to just… listen to me for five minutes. Thank goodness that’s all behind us now.

ATB: Did you ever wonder why she started the game of cat and mouse between you two?  Why she started The Order?

DK: Believe it or not, I blamed it on her humanity. Humans like to be revered, they like to be regaled. No way to deny that she was a pretty big wig in ancient times. I thought she had just gotten too comfortable with the benefits of the position and gathered a nice little group of softheads to keep fanning her flame. And, to piss me off. She knew my primary purpose was to keep our existence on the down-low, and she off and goes creating a secretive institution whose whole purpose seemed to be making sure that knowledge was never lost. As for the cat-and-mouse thing… you’ve heard the line about a woman scorned, right?

ATB: What has been your impression of Sheppard Smyth?

DK: At first, I was jealous. I thought maybe Vick had feelings for the sot. Later, when I found out why she was really protecting him, I felt kind of sorry for the bastard. I mean, I’ve suffered from Victoria’s plotting too, but Shep… He lost his wife because of her.

ATB: Thank you for answering our questions today. I have just one more for you. What are your plans with Victoria now? Any areas of the world you’d like to return to with her?

DK: Actually, Victoria and I are planning on returning to Altunatus. Well, I’m returning, and she’s going for the first time. She is royalty, after all. And me… well, I might be hopping to petition for the honor of marrying her. Might.
And if that’s turned down, maybe we’ll try Vegas.

12.21.12 Blog Tour Book Review

12.21.12

Author: Killian McRae
Pages: 238 pgs
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: December 21 2010
Review Source: Publisher

First of all, look at this gorgeous cover! That's what first drew my interest to this story. It's so haunting and amazing. If nothing else, I could just stare at it for hours.

12.21.12 follows Sheppard Smyth, Victoria Kent, and Dimitri Kronastia on a pretty amazing journey that you'd never see coming. Shep is an archeologist and Eygptologist, jaded from losing his wife and more determined than ever to prove his theory that Cleopatra was murdered.

When he's brought in to check out some finds at a dig site in Mexico for a college friend, his world is turned completely upside down. Victoria, his friends intern, takes off with the artifacts, and Dimitri, a notorious mobster, shows up at the site to find out what happened. And Shep finds out that nothing is what appears to be.

Killian does a wonderful job of weaving a complicated tale, revealing new pieces little by little, leaving you wondering just what's happening. Each chapter adds another piece to the puzzle and the characters are even more intriguing. There is so much more to Dimitri and Victoria than you'd ever expect. What secrets could they be hiding?

So much research and thought went into this, and it's definitely not your typical 2012 story. I loved the delicate balance and interwoven theories that Killian used, hooking her readers until the very end. There's so much more that I want to say, but I'm afraid of giving too much away.

Whirlwind by Robin DeJarnett

Whirlwind
Whirlwind 1
Author: Robin DeJarnett
Pages: 264 pgs
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: December 21 2010
Review Source: Author/Publisher

I won a copy of this novel from a contest that Robin held, and I'm so glad that I did! Thank you again. Whirlwind was definitely just that, a whirlwind of romance and suspense, leaving the readers wanting more!

For Melissa Williams, her best friend getting married means that she'll never get to see him again and she doesn't want to be a part of that. Even though she refuses to be in the wedding, she still goes to support Mitch McCallister and his new bride. What she doesn't expect is to find a gorgeous guy; a gorgeous guy that turns out to be Mitch's younger brother Jason and someone she had happened to email back and forth months before. She couldn't be more mortified.

Their connection is instantaneous, their chemistry undeniable, and it's only been a few hours. Can you really fall in love at first sight?

While romance and love are blooming, danger also lurks in the horizon. Someone is after Melissa. He had her in his grasp and lost her, now he'll stop at nothing to track her down and finish what he started.

Okay, can I just say first of all that I loved Robin's writing style. Everything was just down to earth and fun, including the characters. She really got you into Melissa's head; when she was embarrassed, so were you. I loved that.

There was so much happening in this story, none the least of which was Melissa figuring out that their was so much more to her than she thought. Her insecurity's about herself and about being left behind play a huge part in her relationship with Jason and the way Robin deals with is is very real and accurate. Sometimes it takes looking through others eyes to really see yourself.

This is definitely a romance novel, so anyone under eighteen probably shouldn't read it unless with parental approval. And, I thought I saw somewhere that there is going to be a sequel to this lovely story and I for one can't wait to find out more about these two love birds. To find out more about this any upcoming news from Robin you can check out her website at http://robindejarnett.com or you can follow her on Twitter at http://twitter.com/robindejarnett. Oh and she's also on Goodreads http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/4481607.Robin_DeJarnett.

Trust in Advertising by Victoria Michaels

Trust in Advertising

Author: Victoria Michaels
Pages:452 pgs
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: July 27th 2010
Review Source: Publisher

I was first able to read Trust in Advertising when it wasn't a published work, and I love it just as much now as I did then. Victoria Michaels has a way of telling a story and delving into emotions that just pulls you in as a reader.

Victoria takes you on a journey with Lexi White as she tries to find her way in the world after the loss of her father. With the help of her spunky neighbor, and a few rather strange interviews under her belt, Lexi starts working for Hunter Advertising.

And after a sudden promotion, she finds herself working as an assistant for the one person she thought she'd never see again, Vincent Drake. He was the guy every guy wanted to be and every girl wanted, including Lexi, in high school. He's not the same guy he once was, and Lexi soon learns that she's not either. They both have to learn to open up and most importantly... trust.

The banter between Lexi and Vincent is light and flirty, you can really see how comfortable they become with each other as the story progresses. Even though they didn't really know each other before, it's like they've always been friends and she's always been a part of his family. There were times when I wanted to yell at them for being so blind, but that just shows how well Victoria developed her characters.

You get a little bit of everything in this story: humor, romance, heartache, second chances. I hated to see it come to an end and wanted to read more about their story. Maybe someday...

So if you're looking for a fun romance, then I highly recommend Trust in Advertising. Victoria Michaels has won me over and I'll be checking out anything else from her, too. To find out more about her stories and any upcoming works from her you can check out her website http://victoriamichaels.net or you can follow her on Twitter http://twitter.com/vic_michaels.

New Cover Revealed

Ally Condie, the author of Matched, just revealed the cover for the series sequel "Crossed". And let me tell you, it is absolutely awesome!

Summary: In search of a future that may not exist and faced
with the decision of who to share it with, Cassia
journeys to the Outer Provinces in pursuit of Ky—
taken by the Society to his certain death—only to
find that he has escaped, leaving a series of clues
in his wake.

Cassia’s quest leads her to question much of what
she holds dear, even as she finds glimmers of a
different life across the border. But as Cassia nears
resolve and certainty about her future with Ky, an
invitation for rebellion, an unexpected betrayal, and
a surprise visit from Xander—who may hold the key
to the uprising and, still, to Cassia’s heart—change
the game once again. Nothing is as expected on the
edge of Society, where crosses and double crosses
make the path more twisted than ever.

I was in love with the brilliance of Matched, the subtly and slow uprising, but just reading that summary has me even more excited to read Crossed! I love getting news like this.

Can't Wait For!

There are quite a few books that I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on. It's amazing the great quality of writing out there now. I feel privileged to want to join ranks with some of these creative and wonderful individuals.

First there's Wildefire by Karsten Knight. I follow him on Twitter and his blog and I love Karsten. He's absolutely adorable and hilarious! I have no doubt that this book will be great.

Summary: Ashline Wilde never received an instruction manual on how to be a 16-year-old Polynesian volcano goddess. If she had, it might have contained helpful warnings such as:

• Dreaming about your (thankfully) mortal boyfriend may cause your bed to spontaneously combust
• Oven mitts should be worn at all times.

Instead, Ash has to learn these life lessons the hard way as her dormant powers erupt at the most awkward times. In the wake of a hometown tragedy, Ash transfers to Blackwood Academy, a boarding school nestled in California’s redwoods, where a group of fellow gods-on-earth have mysteriously convened. As if sophomore year couldn’t get any worse, her storm goddess older sister, the wild and unpredictable Eve, resurfaces to haunt Ashline. With a war between the gods looming over Blackwood, Ash must master the fire smoldering within her before she clashes with her sister one final time, which leads us to life-lesson #3:

• When warm and cold fronts collide, there’s guaranteed to be a storm.

Next there's Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer. I absolutely fell in love with Nightshade and have been eagerly anticipating this sequel. Especially with the way Nightshade left off.

Summary: This thrilling sequel to the much-talked-about Nightshade begins just where it ended.Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemy, and she's certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer, one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack and the man she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive.

Supernaturally by Kiersten White because Evie is just such an adorable character and I'm so anxious to find out more. Oh, and this cover is gorgeous!

Summary: A lot has changed in the six months since Evie escaped from the International Paranormal Containment Agency with her shape-shifter boyfriend, Lend. She finally has the blissfully normal life she’s always dreamed of, including:
1) A real live high school
2) A perfectly ordinary after-school job
3) Her very own locker (and by the way, rusted metal is every bit as awesome as she imagined)

But Evie’s not-so-normal past keeps creeping up on her...and things get pretty complicated when you factor in:
1) A centuries-old, seriously decaying vampire stalker
2) A crazy faerie ex-boyfriend who is the perpetual bearer of really bad news
3) A major battle brewing between the faerie courts where the prize in question happens to be...Evie herself.

So much for normal.

And to help with my Greek mythology fix there's Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. A modern day version of Helen of Troy? Who wouldn't want to read that!

Summary: How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

The sequel to Sophie Jordan's Firelight, Vanish, has also been high on my to get list ever since I finished Firelight. She did an absolutely phenomenal job with Jacinda and describing her fight to keep her draki alive, I am so excited to find out more. And check out this fabulous cover!

Summary: To save the life of the boy she loves, Jacinda did the unthinkable: She betrayed the most closely-guarded secret of her kind. Now she must return to the protection of her pride knowing she might never see Will again—and worse, that because his mind has been shaded, Will’s memories of that fateful night and why she had to flee are gone.

Back home, Jacinda is greeted with hostility and must work to prove her loyalty for both her sake and her family’s. Among the few who will even talk to her are Cassian, the pride’s heir apparent who has always wanted her, and her sister, Tamra, who has been forever changed by a twist of fate. Jacinda knows that she should forget Will and move on—that if he managed to remember and keep his promise to find her, it would only endanger them both. Yet she clings to the hope that someday they will be together again. When the chance arrives to follow her heart, will she risk everything for love?

In bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s dramatic follow-up to Firelight, forbidden love burns brighter than ever.

And last but not least, the Vespertine by Saundra Mitchell. I've been eager to read this based off of the cover alone. The beautiful dress is fascinating and the summary is captivating. And with this coming out Monday you'll be find me at my local Border's standing in line to buy it.

Summary: It’s the summer of 1889, and Amelia van den Broek is new to Baltimore and eager to take in all the pleasures the city has to offer. Soon, friends and strangers alike call on Amelia to hear her prophecies. However, a forbidden romance with Nathaniel, an artist, threatens the new life Amelia is building in Baltimore. This enigmatic young man is keeping secrets of his own—still, Amelia finds herself irrepressibly drawn to him.

I was lucky enough to win a signed copy of this from a contest that Jessica held on her site and I'm so glad that I got the chance to read it. Thank you again Jessica! And you won't be able to put this book down once you get your hands on it.

Charlie Cooper met and married her husband, Gideon Cooper, within a few days time. She's finishing up her degree to become a teacher and he's a Navy Seal. On the night of their one year anniversary Gideon has some news for Charlie, he's shipping out on a mission and will be gone for six months. That's not the typical news any wife wants to hear about her husband, and Charlie struggles to come to terms with it.

With the help of Gideon's parents, his brother and girlfriend, and Charlies twin brother, Chance, she can make it through the separation, right? She thought so, until one incident brought everything crumbling down around her. And it's because of that she finds a strength she didn't know she had and how to rely on the help of those around her.

Jessica McQuinn brings you skillfully through a roller coaster of emotions as each of her characters comes to terms with the scary reality they find themselves in. Heartache and betrayal, lies and truths, fear and strength, Jessica holds nothing back in this heart stopping story.

I don't want to give anything away, but rest assured that you'll get a little bit of everything in this story. Romance, humor, heartbreak, and triumph. And Jessica has mentioned that she's working on the next book in this series! I for one can't wait to find out what she's got in store for us next.

So if your looking for a good romance, with a little bit of suspense, and a tissue warning, then this is the book for you. To find out more about Jessica and her books you can check out her website at http://jessicamcquinn.com or follow her on Twitter at http://twitter.com/jessicamcquinn.
