Waiting on Wednesday: Falling Kingdom by Morgan Rhodes

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, which spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.
(Coming December 2012)

In a land where magic has been forgotten but peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest is simmering. Three kingdoms grapple for power—brutally transforming their subjects’ lives in the process. Amidst betrayals, bargains, and battles, four young people find their fates forever intertwined:

Cleo: A princess raised in luxury must embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of a magic long thought extinct.

Jonas: Enraged at injustice, a rebel lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country impoverished—and finds himself the leader of a people’s revolution centuries in the making.

Lucia: A girl adopted at birth into a royal family discovers the truth about her past—and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Magnus: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, a firstborn son begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword...

The only outcome that’s certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

This just sounds awesome! I love the cover and how dark and mysterious it looks, leaving you to wonder just what's in store. And the description gives you just enough to want to know more as well. I definitely can't wait to get my hands on this one!

Waiting on Wednesday: Icons by Margaret Stohl

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, which spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.
(Coming May 2013)
Your heart beats only with their permission.

Everything changed on The Day. The day the windows shattered. The day the power stopped. The day Dol's family dropped dead. The day Earth lost a war it didn't know it was fighting.

Since then, Dol has lived a simple life in the countryside -- safe from the shadow of the Icon and its terrifying power. Hiding from the one truth she can't avoid.

She's different. She survived. Why?

When Dol and her best friend, Ro, are captured and taken to the Embassy, off the coast of the sprawling metropolis once known as the City of Angels, they find only more questions. While Ro and fellow hostage Tima rage against their captors, Dol finds herself drawn to Lucas, the Ambassador's privileged son. But the four teens are more alike than they might think, and the timing of their meeting isn't a coincidence. It's a conspiracy.

Within the Icon's reach, Dol, Ro, Tima, and Lucas discover that their uncontrollable emotions -- which they've always thought to be their greatest weaknesses -- may actually be their greatest strengths.

Bestselling author Margaret Stohl delivers the first book in a heart-pounding series set in a haunting new world where four teens must piece together the mysteries of their pasts -- in order to save the future.

After having the chance to read the Caster Chronicles books by both her and Kami, I'm really excited to see their solo work. And this one sounds amazing! So different from their southern gothic and like an exciting new series to sink into.

Once Upon a Second Chance

Author: Marian Vere
Pages: 210 pgs
Genre: Romance, Contemporary
Release Date: November 6th 2012
Review Source: Omnific

Once Upon a Second Chance is Marian Vere's debut novel and an adorable one at that. I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end. Just hoping there would be a little bit more.

Life for Julia Basham isn't what it once was. She goes to work, spends time with her best friend and sister, and maybe goes out on the occasional date. No fun or risks. And no fairytails.

At least until Nicholas Kerkley comes back into the picture. Her once Prince Charming is the new client for her financial planning team and Julia is thrust back into his world. Her dreams of a happily ever after were crushed, but with Nick suddenly back in her life, Julia may just have to take matters into her own hands.

From the get go Julia was a fun character with just enough wit and charm to make her enjoyable. She got herself into some pretty crazy situations and always tried to find her way out. I loved that even though she was a girl who believed in fairytales and happily ever afters it didn't make her weak or any less capable of taking charge.

Marian gives her readers the perfect balance of humor and romance, never making things too serious or over dramatic. Though there were some upsetting situations, they weren't the basis of the story and didn't completely take it over.

Overall, I enjoyed this sweet romance and wish that there had been much more so it wouldn't have ended. Julia and Nick were adorable and had to find their way back to one another, through misunderstandings and heartbreak. Maybe someday we can get more from these two crazy kids...

Waiting on Wednesday: Everbound by Brodi Ashton

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, which spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.
(Coming January 2013) Everneath #2
Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should’ve been hers. She’s living a borrowed life, and she doesn’t know what to do with the guilt. And every night Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away.

Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to assist her in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself.

Nikki and Cole descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they’d anticipated — and more deadly. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own.

In this enthralling sequel to Everneath, Brodi Ashton tests the bonds of destiny and explores the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.
After I finished Everneath, I thought it was absolutely brilliant! Brodi truly took a Greek myth and really made it her own. It was so amazingly done and by the time I reached the end I couldn't wait for the next book. It's almost here and I am beyond excited!

City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

City of Lost Souls

The Mortal Instruments 5

Author: Cassandra Clare
Pages: 535 pgs
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Release Date: May 8th 2012
Review Source: Gifted

Cassandra Clare has managed to completely pull in me in with each book and she definitely didn't disappoint with this latest installment. And look at this cover, isn't is gorgeous!

After finally finding Jace and Sebastian, Clary discovers that they are bound to one another because of Lilith. To kill one would be to kill the other as well.

She is determined to find a way to save Jace, and with the help of Alec, Isabelle, Simon, and Magnus they will find it. But what price is too much to pay? And will they find what they end before it's too late.

Maybe it was just me, but I noticed a slightly different tone in this book as opposed to the others, which wasn't a bad thing. The writing and the tone was just a little bit different, more mature and intense perhaps. Either way I really liked it and it seemed appropriate for the setting of CoLS and where it was headed. I'm going to try my absolute hardest to not give any spoilers.

One of my favorite things about Cassie's writing is not only her attention to the world building, but also the characters. We get a little bit of everything from her, and yet it's so much for the series and the overall story. I can hardly remember it all, but Cassie brings it all together seamlessly.

I've been a big Jace and Clary fan from the beginning, wanting them together and loving when they finally had the chance. But after this particular book I have to say that I'm rooting a little more for Isabelle and Simon now too. Sure, I thought they'd be cute if they'd end up together, but I really loved how Cassie showed each of their struggles and the growth their relationship. I hope to see more of them in the last book. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the Jace and Clary moments that we got, because I did. They were some of my favorites.

Hopefully I can say this without any spoilers. Now, after the final battle in this particular book things have been set up for the ultimate battle for the series. I can only imagine what all she will have in store for us, and can't see any of the characters that we've come to love die. We shall see. But until that happens we have the last book in The Infernal Devices trilogy, Clockwork Princess, coming out soon and I'm beyond excited for that. I have my fingers cross for the conclusion I'm hoping for and am looking forward to how it all works out.

I'm happy to be a next stop on the tour for Elizabeth Richards' debut Black City, hosted by Good Choice Reading. To follow the rest of the tour click HERE.

A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war.

Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash’s long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they’re caught, they’ll be executed—but their feelings are too strong.

When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.

Pre-order book 2: Phoenix

An excerpt from Black City:

The atmosphere in the kitchen drops by a few degrees when Ash spots me sitting at the table. Surprise registers on his face.

He’s changed out of his school uniform and is now wearing dark trousers, leather work boots and a fitted black shirt that accentuates every inch of his powerful, muscular frame.

He looks at me, into me, like he can see every secret I have, every rush of my blood. My pulse races with fear and a much more disturbing, unexpected emotion: desire.

I turn away, horrified at my body’s reaction to him. It’s sick and irrational. He’s a Darkling, a predator that would gladly rip my throat out, given the slightest provocation. Then why are my cheeks burning so red?

I’m just hot from the fire, that’s all.

“Ash!” MJ beams.

“Hey, MJ. I swear you’ve shot up another inch since I last saw you,” Ash replies, ignoring the frosty look from Day.

“You’ll be almost as tall as me one day.”

MJ laughs at this. I doubt anyone will be as tall as Ash. He has to hunch over to stop his head from hitting the low ceiling as he walks over to Michael, passing him a crate of canned goods. It all seems so absurd. Ash is a Darkling, not to mention a Haze dealer. He’s a monster.

If that’s true, then why is Ash giving Day’s family all that food? my father’s gentle voice whispers inside my head. Is that the action of a monster?

A Darkling murdered you! I angrily silence him.

Great, now I’m having arguments with my own imagination. That’s how much Ash Fisher’s unsettling me.
